WSU is moving away from Symantec as its provider of anti-virus software. Please keep your work computer safe by updating your software to ForeFront if you work on a PC and ClamXav if you use a Macintosh.
Installing ForeFront Anti-virus for Windows computers:
1. Go to the start button in the lower left corner of your screen and click it.
2. You should at this point see a box into which you can type text.
a. In windows XP the box will have the word "run" next to it
b. In windows 7 the box will have a magnifying glass next to it.
3. Into this box, please copy and paste one of the following network share locations (You do not need to go both places) and then press enter.
\\van-dfs\cross campus\campus.software
OR
\\van-abyss\fep\
4. Two folders for ForeFront are there. There is a version for 32-bit operating systems and one for 64-bit operating systems. If you are unsure what operating system you have you can install the 32-bit version.
a. If you want to know whether you have 32-bit or 64-bit: Click on the start menu, Go into all programs, then Accessories, then System Tools Open the System Information. In the list, look for System Type – If system type is X86-based PC, you have a 32-bit computer. If the system type is X64-based PC, then you have a 64-bit computer.
5. Run the program inside the folder and allow it to remove Symantec and install Forefront.
Please note, depending on the version of Symantec you have, you may need to manually remove it using the add/remove programs in the control panel – the Forefront installer will let you know.
Installing ClamXav Anti-virus for Macintosh computers:
1. Download the newest ClamXAV from http://clamxav.com/download.php
2. Look in the disk image you downloaded for the ClamXav icon and move it to your Applications folder
3. Launch ClamXav from your Applications folder
4. Click OK on the windows that come up, then click Install
5. Click through the install steps and enter the computer's password when prompted. In most cases, this is not your network ID password.
6. Choose to “check automatically” for updates and “update now”
7. When updates are finished (this will take a few minutes), open ClamXav preferences
8. Click “Sentry” tab. Use the plus sign to add Desktop, Documents, and Downloads to the list of locations to watch
9. Click the “Launch ClamXav Sentry when you log in to this computer” button
10. Click OK
WSU no longer licenses any software for non-WSU computers—no MS Office, Adobe, anti-virus, etc. Now we must purchase our own software for our personal computers—including anti-virus software. A good place to start shopping is the Tech Store on Zzusis. Look for discounts!
Some anti-virus software is free, others are subscription-based. Michelle Eccles in VIT researched anti-virus software for us. Take a look as part of your decision-making process.
