Commencement is this Saturday

    Butch and graduating studentsWSU Vancouver will graduate 906 students—13 doctoral candidates, 133 master’s candidates and 760 bachelor’s candidates—at its 2013 commencement ceremony at 1 p.m. May 11 at the Sleep Country Amphitheater.

    Ron Pimentel, clinical assistant professor of marketing and faculty director for the professional sales program, will be recognized with the 2013 Students’ Award for Teaching Excellence.

    The Sleep Country Amphitheater is located at 17200 N.E. Delfel Road, Ridgefield. Parking and gates open at 11 a.m. on commencement day. The seating area opens at 11:30 a.m. Concessions will be available. Commencement is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.

Keeler new APAC representative

    Jo KeelerJo Keeler, principal assistant in the Office of Finance and Operations, is WSU Vancouver’s new APAC representative.

    The next meeting will be 9 – 10:30 a.m. in the Dengerink Administration building, Tower Room. View the meeting agenda online. In addition, Brad Stewart, APAC vice chair and assistant director for WSU wellness will be visiting that day. He will attend the APAC meeting and will be available to answer questions regarding his roles in APAC and WSU wellness.

Grant proposal going out in May?

    WSU Vancouver entrance roadPeggy Bowe, grant and contract administrator in the Office of Grants and Research Development, will be out of the office May 14 – 21. The Vancouver campus will have limited ability to submit proposals during that week. Please notify Peggy or Tamara Shoup, grant proposal coordinator in the Office of Research and Graduate Education, now if you are working on a proposal that is due during those dates.

Mosher participated on youth violence panel

    Clay MosherClay Mosher, professor of sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences, participated with five other panelists in “Understanding Youth Violence—A Community Discussion” on April 30 at the Vancouver Community Library. The event was hosted by the Clark County Public Health Advisory Council and the Board of County Commissioners. Event organizers hope a better understanding of youth violence will improve community health by paving the way for stronger prevention efforts. View the discussion on CVTV online.

    Clay has written or co-authored five books and dozens of research articles on topics related to crime and juvenile justice. Last winter the Safe Communities Task Force released a comprehensive gang assessment authored by Clay. The report found significant gang presence in Clark County. Find the full report (PDF) online.

FYI on summer publication schedule

    FYI Vancouver will be published every-other Monday through the summer. FYI will resume its weekly publication schedule Aug. 19.
